flash forward tenth is an anniversary book-set celebrating past winners of the eponimous emerging photographers’ competition.

To mark the first decade of their emerging photographers competition — Flash Forward, The Magenta Foundation published Flash Forward Tenth, a curated collection of work by previously featured artists.

This special anniversary set consisted of four books: the first book was dedicated to the best in show category — Bright Spark, while the remaining books highlighted a curated list of 100 past winners from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

It was important to relate the design aesthetic of the book-set to that of previous yearly catalogues — however, the set also needed to look and feel special. With that in mind we leaned into the existing title lockup configuration to create consistency with past catalogues, and added a touch of celebratory sparkle through the use of luxurious materials and techniques — soft touch paper and iridescent foil stamping.

The books were quarter-bound, juxtaposing the linen-wrapped spine with the high-gloss front and back covers.

There were logistic considerations to the dimensions and weight of the four books — compared to past catalogues the books were scaled down by 25%, requiring adjustments to the underlying grid. We further expanded on the existing catalogue design to accommodate new types of content for the anniversary issue — essays, interviews, and chapter dividers.
