canadian business magazine is definitely Not Your Parent’s Magazine.

Founded in 1928, Canadian Business Magazine (CB) was a legacy publication that had traditionally focused on the power shifts of Bay Street. In 2021 they approached the studio for a redesign that would better reflect their new values and a contemporary approach to business journalism.

I joined Studio Wyse to directly assist and support the Creative Director in the launch and redesign of the magazine across print and digital channels. I continued on as the Lead Senior Designer on the project, working together with the team on all nine print issues.

The relaunch was a resounding success, earning high praise from the publisher and readers alike, including award recognition from National Magazine Awards and the Society of Publication Designers.

The print redesign included a bold new masthead, an unexpected pairing of typefaces (New Spirit is my spirit animal), and a flexible grid system that enabled us to create endlessly dynamic compositions.

If there was an award for most impressive renewal of a legacy media brand, Canadian Business would win it hands down. The current magazine is fresh, vibrant, and fun, and geared toward an expanded audience.

In keeping with the magazine’s new direction, the website was a marked departure from traditional media. The homepage featured modular blocks of asymmetric cards, a focus on hierarchy, and attention to typographic detail. The article pages focused on improving the reading experience across both long and short reads, while also allowing the editorial team the utmost flexibility in the back-end.

Some of my favourite moments on the magazine included working with first-class journalism, collaborating with our amazing editors, having the occasional placeholder hed make the editorial cut (The Crocs of the Matter anyone?), commissioning top talent globally, and receiving the nicest nod from the National Magazine Awards.
